The Quire mobile app, built with Flutter, aimed to provide a seamless experience across iOS and Android platforms. While Flutter offered a single codebase solution, it presented a challenge: designing an interface system that catered to the distinct behavioral patterns and expectations of each platform.
In the early iterations, I adopted Google’s Material Design System for the app design. However, as our iOS user base grew, we recognized the need to foster a sense of inclusivity for both sets of users. This necessitated a delicate balance between adhering to Material Design principles for Android users while adapting specific elements to align with Apple's Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) for iOS users.
To bridge the gap and unify the user experience across both platforms, I embarked on a deep exploration of both Material Design and Apple's Human Interface Guidelines (HIG). This involved meticulously researching design elements and ongoing communication with the development team. By collaborating closely with the developers, I gained a deeper understanding of the technical nuances of cross-platform development. This combined knowledge allowed me to prioritize minimal changes, ensuring the most comprehensive and consistent user experience possible for both iOS and Android users.
